Disaster SNAP, a food support program administered by NCDHHS, is one of the relief programs available to counties affected by Hurricane Helene. Disaster SNAP will bring up to $120 million in short-term food benefits to households across Western NC, but we need help to get the message out to families and help them enroll. Applications are only open for 7 days, from Friday Oct.18 through Thursday Oct. 24! Please help us reach families in your school communities this week. A few high-level notes on Disaster SNAP (1) Families will get funds on an EBT debit card that can be used to buy groceries and hot food (2) The program income limits account for disaster-related expenses and losses in income/wages, meaning that families who may not have been eligible for SNAP prior to the hurricane could still be eligible for Disaster SNAP. (3) Income limits and benefit award is based on household size; a family of 5 may be eligible to receive up to $1,158. (4) ALL families can apply for Disaster SNAP. Immigrant and undocumented families can also apply and foreign passports are an accepted form of ID. (5) Families who are already enrolled in SNAP benefits through NC Food and Nutrition Services do NOT have to apply for Disaster SNAP.

Electrical and communication services have improved throughout Macon County. Supplies and shipments are arriving into our area including routine fuel shipments. Therefore, in the best interest of our students, Macon County Schools- Franklin, Highlands, and Nantahala will operate on a regular schedule beginning tomorrow, Thursday, October 3, 2024. Afterschool Edventure will also begin services for students on Thursday, October 3. The Macon County School System has worked diligently with the Macon County Emergency Management staff to make this decision. As we navigate returning to school, accommodations and provisions will be made as needed to best support and serve our students and families now and in the days ahead.
