This afternoon at Macon Early college was really special. A few months ago, Chief Academic Officer Mickey Noe, Macon Early College Principal Caleb Parham and ESL Teacher Kim Pinkston were brainstorming ways to add additional support to our ESL students in Elementary School. After much deliberation , we created a peer tutoring program where Spanish speaking students from Franklin High and MEC would go into the Elementary schools and tutor our students in English. This program quickly grew and became much more than a tutoring program. Our high school students were able to develop position relationships with the Elementary students. Now the program is like a big brother/big sister program with a high level of tutoring.
Today we celebrated the success of our program with a wonderful lunch from Chick-filet and all the students had the opportunity to discuss their experiences. South Macon Elementary Principal Mrs. Allison Guynn was also present to thank the kids for their hard work and dedication. Mrs. Guynn told the students they were a "true blessing" and she was so excited to continue the program.

Today was a beautiful day in Highlands, NC! Thank you to Highlands School for hosting! A big shout out to Jennifer Garrett and her team for organizing today’s event as well as to Sheriff Holbrooks and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office. There are so many individuals that played a role in today’s festivities and we could never thank you enough for helping the athletes have the time of their lives. We are already looking forward to next year!
We are so excited when our former students return to make an impact on our current and future students!
Congratulations Daniel Pickens!
